From pristine beaches and hidden waterfalls to vibrant local culture and unforgettable adventures, the Samaná Peninsula offers one of the Caribbean’s most extraordinary destinations—all just moments from Casa Selva Azul.
One of the greatest luxuries of staying above Playa Cosón is the freedom to discover a different beach each day. From long stretches of golden sand and calm turquoise waters to surf breaks, secluded coves and local beach favorites, every stretch of coastline has its own personality.
Our closest beach and one of our personal favorites, Playa Cosón is known for its wide, uncrowded shoreline—perfect for long walks, surfing and sunset swims. Walk the beach toward Río Cosón or Río Balatá, where the rivers meet the sea, or arrange a horseback ride along the shore and through the coconut groves.
For lunch, drinks and beach service, we recommend Casa Cosón.
One of our favorite beaches in Las Terrenas, Playa Bonita offers the best of both worlds: calm turquoise water at one end and surf at the other. Spend the day swimming, walking the palm-lined beach or catching a wave.
For beachfront dining, cocktails and a livelier atmosphere, we recommend Mosquito Beach Club.
For a more local Las Terrenas beach experience, head to Punta Popy. Calm, shallow water makes it especially good for swimming and families, while local vendors offer chairs, umbrellas, fresh juices, coconut water, cold drinks and casual beach fare.
Casa Selva Azul tip: We prefer Punta Popy on weekdays, when it tends to be quieter.
A beautiful, peaceful cove surrounded by nature, Playa Morón is a wonderful choice when you want to venture beyond Las Terrenas. Its calm turquoise water is ideal for a relaxed beach day, with a beachfront kiosco near Cap Limón for lunch and refreshments.
Protected by an offshore reef, Playa El Portillo is known for its long shoreline and shallow, calm water—especially appealing for families and relaxed swimming. When the wind picks up, it is also one of the area's popular spots for kitesurfing and other wind sports.
Surrounded by lush mountains and dramatic cliffs, Playa El Valle feels distinctly wilder than the beaches around Las Terrenas. We love the right side of the beach near the rocks and small river, where the scenery is especially beautiful.
On the way back, stop at El Cocuyo in Monte Rojo for lunch, drinks or panoramic views over Samaná Bay.
Often ranked among the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches, Playa Rincón is worth the journey for its long stretch of pristine sand, clear water and spectacular natural setting. We prefer the right side of the beach, where the water is typically calmer for swimming.
Before leaving, head to Caño Frío at the far left end of the beach, where local boats offer short rides along the freshwater river through lush tropical vegetation.
Discover waterfalls hidden within the rainforest, ride horses along untouched beaches, hike to secluded coves, explore the Los Haitises National Park, or visit our own Taíno cave tucked inside the estate. If you’d like a local guide, our concierge team will be happy to assist.
One of Samaná's most spectacular waterfalls, Salto El Limón is reached through lush tropical countryside. Explore on foot with a trusted local guide or make the journey on horseback, then cool off with a swim beneath the falls.
Casa Selva Azul Tip: Plan the best time to visit with our team, as the falls can get crowded.
Explore one of the Dominican Republic's most extraordinary natural treasures by boat, passing through mangrove forests, caves, limestone islands and protected wildlife habitats. A spectacular day trip for nature lovers and photographers.
One of our favorite local adventures. Hike through beautiful jungle and coastal landscapes to secluded Playa Jackson, where your guide can arrange a private beach picnic surrounded by pristine nature. It's a wonderful combination of adventure, ocean and time completely away from it all.
Accessible primarily by boat, Playa Ermitaño is one of the area's most secluded beaches. Crystal-clear water, soft sand and jungle surroundings make it a beautiful escape for swimming, snorkeling and disconnecting for the day.
Each winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth, making it one of the world's remarkable destinations for whale watching. Guided boat excursions operate during whale season, typically from mid-January through mid-April.
Experience Playa Cosón on horseback, riding along its wide sandy shoreline, through coconut groves and quiet stretches of beach. Suitable for beginners and experienced riders, it's one of our favorite ways to experience the natural beauty of the area.
One of our favorite things about Las Terrenas is its remarkably diverse dining scene. The town has a distinctly European influence, shaped in part by the many European restaurateurs who have made Las Terrenas home and become part of the local community. From Italian and Mediterranean cuisine to fresh seafood, Dominican favorites and lively beach clubs, there is always somewhere different to discover. Here are a few of our favorites.
